“What beautiful music!! Loved the feel, richness and engaging nature of the original material as expressed by these wonderful musicians and their narrator adding another literary dimension to the gig.”
The Novellas are a 5-piece band from the Bega Valley on the Far South Coast of NSW, Australia. Our songs are inspired by contemporary works of fiction from Australia and beyond. Sparse & atmospheric, The Novellas paint in song the evocations of the printed word and celebrate the emotional power of storytelling.
The Novellas concept was born when singer/songwriter Myoung Jae Yi used his book reading hangovers as raw material for his songwriting contributions to the Candelo Songwriters Club led by Phil Moriarty of the Black Sea Gentlemen. The result is a rich tapestry of jazz-infused, folk-rock pop songs that capture the bittersweet literature that inspires them. The live show is peppered with readings from these books. Past readers include actors Tracy Mann and Patrick Dickson.
The lineup is Myoung Jae Yi on guitar and vocals, bassist Josh Becker, Anna Martin on drums, the youthful chanteuse Cellestine Janiola on vocals and Andrew Gray on vocals and piano. Their debut EP, Songs from Fiction, Pt.1 was recorded at Pirate Studios by Lime Spiders and ex-Saints guitarist Dave Sparks.
